Who We Are
Special Olympics is a global organization that was established in 1968. With over 4 million athletes participating each year, Special Olympics fosters
personal and physical development for children and adults with intellectual disabilities through the joy of athletic activity and competition.Special Olympics is a global organization that is driven by the support of the community. In Area 7 of Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA Area 7), we have a diverse community of individuals who help us succeed at our mission each and every day.
Athletes
At SOGA Area 7, we focus on our athlete’s abilities, not their disabilities. Our athletes are welcomed with acceptance and understanding into our athletic community. SOGA Area 7 is home to a variety of team sports that inspire confidence and self-empowerment, including golf, bowling and tennis. Our competitions are available to children and adults, age 8 and above, who are identified by an agency or professional as having an intellectual disability.
Coaches
Special Olympics coaches are committed to making positive changes in the community and impacting lives. We call this Coaching Excellence. Our coaches maintain the most up-to-date knowledge of sports coaching and training to recognize every athlete’s full potential. Some of our coaches are former Special Olympic athletes!
Families
Special Olympics is a place where families and friends can provide loving support to their favorite athletes. In SOGA Area 7, families are part of the team. Our network of families provides community support by sharing positivity, acceptance, and joy when our athletes accomplish something great. SOGA Area 7 also provides community resources for families with disabilities.
Sponsors

Volunteers
Our volunteers are the backbone of each and every Special Olympics event. We truly are a grassroots organization — everyone from coaches to event organizers to fundraisers are part of our dedicated team of volunteers.
