Special Olympics Georgia Programs for Individuals with Profound Disabilities Area 7
The mission of Special Olympics Georgia is to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to develop their physical skills and confidence through athletic competition. In Area 7 of Special Olympics Georgia, this includes individuals with profound intellectual disabilities and/or physical disabilities (in addition to an intellectual disability).
Motor Abilities Training Program (MATP)
The Motor Abilities Training Program increases individuals’ physical skills and motor awareness so that they can perform the basic movements and understand the rules of a sport that make a game possible.
MATP is intended for:
- Individuals with profound intellectual disabilities that interfere with motor skills and/or coordination
- Individuals with a physical disability in addition to an identified intellectual disability
Coaches and trainers who facilitate MATP have been specially trained to provide safe and appropriate physical challenges as well as emotional support.
