Special Olympics Equestrian Events in Georgia Area 7 Sports
The feeling of connection with another living being, especially one that doesn’t judge and offers unconditional love, is vital to a child’s development. And at Special Olympics Georgia, acceptance outside the home is what we’re striving to create for children with intellectual disabilities. Area 7 incorporates the love of horses, the excitement of competition and the joy of inclusion with our equestrian programs.
The Benefits of Equestrian Programs
Horsemanship has been proven an effective therapy for people with intellectual disabilities. In addition to learning new physical skills, individuals also gain emotional and mental benefits, including learning new coping mechanisms. The interaction between humans and horses, which give their riders and handlers immediate feedback about their actions, can help individual with intellectual disabilities to:
- Improve communication
- Build a sense of self-worth
- Develop socialization skills
- Learn impulse control
- Manage intense emotions
- Take responsibility
How You Can Contribute to Our Equestrian Programs
Equestrian competitions let our athletes show how hard they’ve worked and how far they’ve come in building a trusting working relationship with their horses. An excellent rider is an excellent rider, regardless of intellectual disabilities. And Area 7 of Special Olympics Georgia is dedicated to providing our athletes with the supportive environment and encouragement they need to develop greater self-esteem.
If you’re interested in supporting our athletes and becoming involved with our equestrian programs, contact us today! Together, we’ll create a community that accepts and respects everyone regardless of intellectual disability.
