Training Programs for Athletes and Coaches in Area 7

Special Olympics Georgia competitions are intended to inspire teamwork, confidence and fun. We are more likely to achieve these goals if athletes and coaches are ready—physically and mentally—for the events. To ensure they are, Special Olympics athletes must train prior to sporting events, and coaches are trained so that they know how to best challenge and encourage athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Coach Training

Every volunteer coach in the Special Olympics Georgia program must be certified before they are allowed to work with athletes.

Requirements to be certified as a Special Olympics GA coach for specific sports include:

  • New volunteers must get certification at one of our mini-camps held at different venues throughout the year
  • Volunteers already certified to coach a specific sport must renew certification every three years. Re-certification can be done by taking our online quizzes (see links below for coaching re-certification by sport)

Athletic Training

Athletes are required to participate in a designated training program before they may compete in a Special Olympics Georgia-Area 7* event OR a SOGA State or other event. Athletic training includes a variety of instruction, including:

  • Game rules and strategies
  • Physical fitness
  • Game-specific skills

Athletic training builds more than physical skills and game savvy. During training athletes begin to form bonds with their future teammates and coaches.

How to Enroll in a Training Program

Area 7 can help athletes and coaches find the next required training program. Contact us to learn more about online volunteer training or to register as an athlete.
