Who We Help in Area 7

Special Olympics Georgia

Special Olympics is an organization that facilitates the benefits of physical fitness for people with intellectual disabilities. But, these are not the only people we help. Area 7 of Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA Area 7)helps the community, leading by example and inspiring all of us to make a difference.

Why Our Athletes Are Different

When someone has an intellectual disability, they may learn new things slower than other people or have difficulty understanding ideas. But, that doesn’t mean they don’t experience the joy of learning and developing new skills. Special Olympics is a place where people of all ages who have intellectual disabilities are given an opportunity to develop themselves, push their limits, and shine brighter than ever before.

It’s About Ability, Not Disability

In SOGA Area 7, we focus on what are athletes CAN do, rather than the opposite.  Athletes can train for any sport offered in their region which may include:

  • Basketball
  • Bocce Ball
  • Bowling
  • Equestrian
  • Flag Football
  • Floor Hockey
  • Golf
  • Kayaking
  • Softball
  • Sailing
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Track and Field
  • Unified Sports
  • Volleyball

Special Olympic events are a place of openness and understanding. The experience is empowering, for our athletes are recognized for their accomplishments not only on the field, but in their communities and families. Everyone is cheering everyone on.

Olympic Competitions

Special Olympic competitions are just like the Olympics you’ve seen on television. Games are held for each season and athletes can compete in sports for which they have trained and practiced! There is a torch run, medals, and plenty of smiles to go around.

In SOGA Area 7, there are a variety of sports are available for youth and adults with intellectually disabilities.

Contact Us to Get Involved

Special Olympics is an organization dedicated to opening doors for people with intellectual disabilities and helping them succeed. But, we wouldn’t be able to do this without a strong and vibrant community. SOGA Area 7 proudly partners with GEICO, First Presbyterian Day School, Kiwanis Key Club, and other community organizations to help our cause.

Let Me Win, But if I Cannot Win, Let Me Be Brave in the Attempt.
