Special Olympics Softball in Georgia
SOGA Area 7 Sports
At a glance, softball may look a lot like baseball. But, there are key differences that make this game challenging and exciting. The softball is thrown underhand, the ball itself is much larger than a baseball, and the game is played on a smaller playing field.
The game functions the same way as baseball, though. And in SOGA Area 7, qualified Special Olympics athletes can play.
Professional Training for Lifetime Skills
SOGA Area 7 has coaches that are trained to help our athletes succeed. In fact, some of our coaches used to be Special Olympic athletes themselves. Our softball coaches are skilled at developing physical and personal strengths that can last a lifetime.
Special Olympics Softball Competitions
Softball is played in the fall Special Olympic games, outside in the open air. Events include:
- Softball Modified Team
- Softball Traditional Team
- Softball Unified Team
As with every Special Olympics competition, athletes are grouped in competition divisions based on ability level, age and gender. In the Unified Sports competitions, athletes may compete with mixed teams that include individuals without intellectual disabilities (unified partners).
Becoming a Softball Athlete
The first step to becoming a Special Olympics athlete is to find a team. You can contact SOGA Area 7 to find a team in your area of Georgia. We currently connect families with teams throughout Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Jasper, Jones, Monroe, Putnam, Twiggs, Upson and Wilkinson counties.
Athletes will need to fill out a medical history form and complete a physical. After that, it’s time to play!
