Basketball is a game that you can play anywhere at any time. In SOGA Area 7, basketball isn’t played by just anyone. It’s played by our athletes who live their day-to-day lives with intellectual disabilities. But, once they hit the court, anything is possible.

Basketball is a lot of fun. It’s a sport with a simple goal and a fast-paced spirit. Getting the ball into the hoop is the goal, but anything can happen in the blink of an eye. And it brings people together.
And so many kids grow up wanting to play – probably because it’s so fun! At SOGA Area 7, disabilities do not hold you back. We can connect you with an SOGA Area 7 Agency where coaches focus on strengthening ability and opening opportunity. Basketball is open to children and adults, age 8 and above, who are identified by an agency or professional as having an intellectual disability. Athletes are encouraged to reach their potential in individual and team sports.
Playing Basketball on a Team
Special Olympics Basketball also allows athletes to practice teamwork and communication by playing on a team. Key skills must be mastered before playing on the team; basketball athletes should be able to do the target pass, ten meter dribble, and the spot shot.
Special Olympics practices the unified sports model, which promotes social inclusion through shared sports training and experiences in some sports. SOGA Area 7 basketball team divisions are based on age, athletic ability level, and gender. Intellectual disability is swept away in the spirit of sports.
