Bright Futures for Youth and Adults with Disabilities

Area 7 of Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA Area 7)

Children and adults with intellectual disabilities face an impossible world – one that wants to limit their abilities. At Special Olympics, anything is possible. SOGA Area 7 makes possibilities a reality for children and adults with disabilities through the power of sports.

Our Mission

The mission of SOGA Area 7 is the same as all Special Olympics programs – to provide year round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, experience joy, build courage, and share gifts with friends and family.

Building Futures with Sports

Think back to when you were a kid – what did you learn from sports? It’s more than you think. When children play sports, they are developing skills they will use and enjoy the rest of their lives – determination, commitment, social skills, and confidence.

For children with disabilities, it may be more difficult to learn a new sport. But, that doesn’t mean they do not have the capability to develop those skills. Special Olympics provides training, mentorship, and competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities so they can experience the joy of sports and personal growth.

Who Can Join?

Our competitions are available to children and adults, age 8 and above, who are identified by an agency or professional as having an intellectual disability. Youth and adults without disabilities can support Special Olympics by volunteering or by competing in a Unified Sports competition.

Supporting Children with Disabilities

SOGA Area 7 is about more than athletic training – we’re about creating opportunity for youth and adults with disabilities in the community, as well. Our family network supports our athletes by fundraising, advocacy, and cheering loudly at every event. In SOGA Area 7, you are among friends and family who support you. We are here to help.
